Eddie Murphy was the first breakout SNL star of the 1980s. He was born in 1961 in Brooklyn where he was raised by his mother and stepfather - his father, a policeman, died when he was young. Murphy showed comic talent from an early age and was performing in local venues at the age of 15.
At age 19, Lorne Michaels signed him to join the 1980 cast of SNL. It wasn't long before audiences latched onto Murphy's talent. Characters like Gumby, Buckwheat, and Mr. Robinson soon became favorites along with his dead-on impressions. His popularity soared higher with his role opposite of Nick Nolte in the movie "48 Hours" and his live concert films. |
