John Lennon composed the 1967 song by combining three separate songs he had been working on. Additionally, when he learned that a teacher at his old primary school was having his students analyse Beatles' lyrics, he added a verse of specifically nonsensical words designed to confuse listeners.
The walrus within the song is a reference to the walrus in Lewis Carroll's The Walrus and the Carpenter. Lennon later expressed dismay at learning that the walrus was the villain within the poem .
